Annual CSU Pueblo Pack the Park event set for Saturday at the Runyon Sports Complex

BY JEFF LETOFSKY | The Pueblo Chieftain | MAY 5, 2021

Damian Stambersky has never experienced a Pack the Park event. As the first-year head coach of the Colorado State University Pueblo baseball team, he'll get that opportunity on Saturday. That's when the 16th annual Pack the Park extravaganza takes place at the Runyon Sports Complex. The event kicks off with the Art & Lorraine Gonzales Youth Clinic from 5-6 p.m., followed by the baseball game at 7 p.m. between Colorado Mesa and CSU Pueblo.

The clinic and the game are free and prizes will be raffled off during the game. There are no restrictions as far as capacity goes in conjunction with the Pueblo County Health Department.
Ricky Gonzales, the nephew of Art Gonzales, will throw out the first pitch.

"We're looking forward to interacting with the community," Stambersky said. "We've been cooped up at our place and I know our players love working with the kids. "I've never done this with a camp, taking batting practice and playing the game. That will be different. At the places I've been before we've just run a three-day camp with the community but never had a game with it."

CSU Pueblo student-athletes and local softball players and high school coaches will provide clinic instruction. All youth in grades K-8 are invited to take part in the clinic and attend the game. All participants will receive a free T-shirt, hot dog, chips and a drink. For more information, contact the CSU Pueblo athletics office at 719-549-2013.

Registration forms are due by Friday to guarantee T-shirt size. Only one entry form is needed per team. T-shirts will be available at the Runyon Sports Complex during clinic registration/check-in, which begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Participants are asked to wear their team uniform and bring a bat and glove. Each participant will receive instruction in hitting, catching, throwing, infield skills and pitching mechanics.
